Where does your clock stand?
The waiting period after a bankruptcy runs from your discharge date, not your filing date, and it is different for every loan program. Answer three questions and see your earliest date for each one. Nothing is pulled, nothing is stored until you ask me to follow up.
Your bankruptcy
It’s on your discharge order or dismissal order. If you only remember the filing date, use that for now and I’ll confirm the real date with you.
Your earliest dates
What the dates mean
The earliest dates above come from each program’s own rulebook. Three things to know before you count on one.
1 · The clockDischarge, not filingChapter 7 counts from the discharge date. A dismissed Chapter 13 counts from dismissal and waits longer than a completed one.
2 · Still in a plan? You may not have to waitFHA, VA and USDA can work during an active Chapter 13 after 12 months of on-time plan payments, with the court’s permission.
3 · The rebuildThe date alone isn’t enoughEvery program wants re-established credit after the bankruptcy. That’s the part you can work on today.
